Music as medicine for modern problems...!!
Last night I was just lying on my bed, staring at the ceiling fan going round and round. Earphones in, nothing else going on. Then "Aaja Piya Tohe Pyar Doon" came on. Lata Mangeshkar's voice, R.D. Burman's music right behind it. And honestly, for 4 minutes and 11 seconds, whatever was bothering me just went quiet. I didn't even notice when it happened. Just 4 minutes 11 seconds. But somehow that was enough for me to breathe again.
That's when this line came to me. LET MUSIC BE LOUDER THAN PROBLEMS.
Because think about it, everyone's problems are kind of the same volume these days. Rent. Some breakup you're still not over. Your family expecting something from you that you never actually agreed to. Scrolling at 1am and comparing your whole messy life to someone's highlight reel that probably took twenty retakes. It's loud, all of it, and it just doesn't turn off anymore. We've basically normalised carrying this around now, like feeling this heavy all the time is just.
Honestly, the way most people deal with all this noise scares me a little. Scrolling for six hours straight until your eyes start hurting. Going numb because it's easier than feeling anything. Drinking just to get your brain to shut up for one night. Staying up till 4am because being alone with your own thoughts has somehow become too much. And nobody even calls it unhealthy anymore. It's normal for half the people I know.
Honestly, everyone's dealing with something right now, and most of us have no idea how to make it feel lighter. So we overthink. We lie awake late at night, going over the same thoughts again and again, and it slowly eats away at our health.
Music does something different, though. It doesn't mute the problem. It sits with it. You put your earphones on, play your favorite song when you're sad, and somehow you feel less alone in it, not more sad. Weird how that works. Like someone finally gets it, even if that someone is just a voice in your earphones who's never met you.
I think that's the one thing music does that scrolling never will. It doesn't distract you from what you're feeling. It understands it. It gives it a shape. You hear one line in a song and suddenly you're like, wait, that's literally me. That's exactly what's going on in my head, and I didn't even have the words for it until now.
There's something about a beat that hits differently when your chest feels heavy. Sometimes it reaches a place that therapy takes months to reach, and it does it in about four minutes. I'm not saying it replaces therapy, so please don't take it that way. But it can do something therapy can't always do instantly: make you feel something real again after you've been numb for too long.
And it's not only about sad songs. Sometimes you need the loud ones too. The ones that make you want to scream the lyrics in your car with the windows up, not caring how off-key you sound. That's not running away from the problem either. It's just letting your body release something your words can't carry.
I think we forgot that music was medicine before it became background noise for reels and gym playlists. Somewhere along the way it turned into just vibes, just content, something to loop while we do literally anything else. But our grandparents, man, they would sit with one song for an hour. They listened to every line and let it move through them properly. We don't sit with anything anymore. Not songs, not feelings, not even people.
Maybe that's why we're more broken than we let on. We stopped sitting with things.
So let music be louder than your problems. Not because the problems disappear when you turn the volume up, because they don't. They're still right there waiting when the song ends. But for those four minutes, you get some space to breathe. You get to feel something that isn't anxiety. You remember that you're still a person who can feel joy or sadness or whatever comes, and not just someone who's constantly managing stress.
Problems will always be loud. That's just life being life. But maybe, in that one moment, we get to choose what's louder. A sad text from someone, or a song that makes you cry the good kind of tears. A spiralling thought at midnight, or a beat that makes your foot tap before you even decide to.
Let the music win sometimes. Not forever. Just enough to remind you that you're still here, still feeling, still more than just your problems stacked on top of each other.
Because somewhere in all the noise life throws at you, there's a song waiting to be louder than it. You just have to hit play.
